The Urban Artist
He was raised on the South Side of Chicago. He is highly respected and considered at the forefront of the arts movement. Villarreal is an art consultant, sculptor, and painter that uses the visual aspects of his surroundings to center the voices of the Chicagoans’ daily life. The neighborhood is the inspiration for his work and provides the concept for his art. He studied from elder maestros to be able to find his own style as a painter of life in the inner-city. Villarreal is fully dedicated to art and cannot see himself doing anything else. He has explored painting in various forms and styles beyond his comfort zone. His main subject is life in the barrio. He considers that an artist job is to be able to find balance between the light and the shadows of their interpretation of reality. Villarreal knows for a fact that art has always been his destiny.

The Club to Gang Evolution A big aspect of our story is the evolution of the community club. We believe that the community clubs of the 60s and 70s evolved (by necessity) into the street gangs of today...because once all the jobs went away, the black market became one of the only sources of money in the neighborhood. This is where the violence, territoriality, and need for protection kicked in. Here are a few soundbites on the topic from those that lived through the change:
